Chapter Seventeen

Ivy

So, she knew about Decker. I kept my gaze on Violet’s.

“He’s dead.”

“Oof, my blood not only made him mortal again, but it also killed him?” Her eyes widened, and she clapped her hands like a spoiled child excited for Christmas.

“No. You didn’t kill him.” I cleared my throat. “I did.”

She hissed and shook her head. “No way. My innocent Ivy killed someone?”

“I’m not proud of it, but he went after Christy.”

Violet scowled. “She can take care of herself.”

“And I thought he had done something to you.”

She looked around and laughed. “Whoops.”

“What is going on?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” She stood and walked over to the painting. “All these years, I thought it was you who had a special talent. I’d wanted so badly to have the same kind of attention, the same knowledge, the same power.”

“I never had power.” I shook my head. “Or attention.”

Violet spun around and folded her arms over her chest. “Please. All Grandma did was fawn over you. Let Ivy sleep. She needs her rest for her studies. Don’t take Ivy to Nightfall Realm. Something might happen to her. Don’t forget to make Ivy’s favorite soup. She’s not feeling well. I was a damn second-class citizen.”

“I don’t remember it that way.”

My grandma had always been fair. She’d tried to make up for the fact that we didn’t have our parents like most kids, but she also kept a stern hand on both of us. We both studied the same amount, but Violet just ignored it all and vanished whenever she had the chance.

“You wouldn’t.” She watched the painting as if it were telling her something.

“That’s what all this is about? You want the attention you think you didn’t get when you were a kid?”

It sounded so childish, so simple, so Violet.

Then I caught myself. Maybe we had dismissed Violet more than I knew. I just always assumed she wanted to go off and have fun while I preferred to stay at home with my grandma.

“Oh, please. Don’t try to paint me like a spoiled brat.” Her lips curled into a wicked smile. “I want more than attention. I want it all. I want fame, fortune, power.” Violet eyed me. “But the one thing I wanted more than anything, you took away from me.”

I closed my eyes. “To be a vampire.”

I felt a breeze and opened my eyes to see Violet take a seat across from me again. “You were dying, Violet. It was the only thing I could think of to do. I had no idea what the elixir would do to you. It had been helping me.”

“With what?” she snapped.

“My thirst.”

“Your thirst?” She pounded the last word hard as she flashed me a dirty look.

I nodded. “I started a change I never knew was coming. The only thing that helped was something that Lydia—”

“When was this?” she asked.

“It was after you fell to Fuchsia’s spell.” I looked at my sister, hoping that I was getting through to her. “Everything happened so fast.”

“I never in a million years thought what would happen to you would, but when you started to awake, I was so excited.
